The tiny trashcan that made living in a small ADU more bearable

Is this considered trash posting?

Who knew this would be the first video I'd test on Substack, but here we are.

I have no idea what will happen once I post this video. Does it show up like a note? Under my posts section? Will it instantly go viral and make me the next Asian Martha Stewart?

I’m messing around. Literally, because this is actually a mini life hack about…trash cans.

You see I always had big trash cans.

It was probably from laziness.

“I don’t want to through out the bag as much if I have more to fill.”

Seemed less efficient and wastes less bags.

I provided the trash can when living with roommates, and just transported the trash can over when I moved into my much smaller ADU.

No problem, right? Wrong. The problem with larger trash cans, especially if you live alone in a smaller space:

  1. Takes up space and looks ugly. The huge trashcan I had was such an eyesore in my small ADU that my girlfriend advised: “I don’t want you working next to a trash can.”

  2. More waste = more smells

  3. Less frequent dumpings = more smells

  4. Combination of #1 and #2 will, in hotter + humid months, lead to the formation of maggots, which turn into fruit flies. If you have never cleaned the underside of a waste bin full of crawling maggots, then…I’d recommend againts this experience.

So I finally decided to get a small trash can.

After going down the Amazon rabbit hole, I found the holy grail and have been using this trash can for the past year with great success (say that with a Borat accent).

WEIRD NAME; GOOD PRODUCT

On Amazon this is the “Tiyafuro 2.4 Gallon Kitchen Compost Bin”. And it checked every box I need for smaller-space living:

Dope features:

  • The lid opens both ways: traditional flip top or slides towards you

  • You can hang it on the outside, or if space allows, on the inside of your cabinet doors

  • No space for hanging? the provided stickers work

  • IT EVEN HAS A FLAT SCOOPER THING EMBEDDED IN THE TRASH CAN LID!!!

I paired it with these 1 gallon compostable trash bags, which also work extremely well for bathroom trash cans. Something about using the same bag for more wins just gives me an efficiency head buzz.

Alright, so this is my first video post on Substack.

If you’re living in a small space, you’re gonna be much happier with this small, weirdly versatile, and cheap trash can.

Waste not, want not,

Oz
